Best time to visit the Addo Elephant National Park.

The Addo Elephant National Park is a good year-round destination with June to September regarded as the best game viewing months.

Good year-round destination

The drier southern winter period with low or no rain fall in the region result in wildlife, especially that of elephants, congregating in numbers around the waterholes. During the early spring months of September and October when many of the animals give birth to young ones, predator activity increases and visitors often come across a lion kill.

The excellent road system makes for great viewing of many of the waterholes and pools. Early winter mornings and late afternoon can be chilly when guided game drives are taken on open vehicles making it essential to bring along warm clothing. With exception of the July school holidays the roads and safari camps are less busy during this period.

From October to April the rainfall increases steadily each month and the bush is greener and animals will spread out more amongst the lush bush. During spring wild flowers transform the park into a colourful feast for the eye, making it a photographer’s delight.

Birdlife

Birdlife too becomes more active with the arrival of many migratory birds from the north from September onwards. These include the European stork, a variety of birds of prey and European swallow. Local visitors tend to come during the December and April school holidays when the days are warm to hot and night temperatures are pleasant.

Scenic Eastern Cape coast

The borders of Addo have in recent years been extended to included parts of the scenic Eastern Cape coast. Trips to the park can easily been combined with a coastal visit.
